That's an interesting thought about [1Luke and 2Luke], Fred. I haven't heard it put that way before.
Thanks. I don't think I have either.
By the way, have you ever seen the Visual Bible DVD on the book of Acts? It is a really wonderful tool to get a good cohesive look at the early congregation. It is the NIV version read word for word, with excellent quality drama. I found it at my local library, but it is available from the International Bible Society.
That sounds interesting. I've just made a note of it and intend to view it if I can.
I have been going through What Does the Bible Really Teach and am disappointed by the approach that is being taken. I thought it was to be a free bible study, but the Witnesses don't bother to stop and look up any of the Bible verses referred to in the book, so it is actually a book study, and there is quite a big difference between the two things.
I am actually quite happy with its visual, yet topical presentation. Its preface, its questions at the front and back ends of each chapter, and its appendices are really well-done, imho [in my humble opinion]. I sat in on the whole Congregational Book Study of this material and found that time and effort was given to be sure that every cited scripture was read and commented on, so as to be helpful in the field. Naturally, I would expect even greater effort to be spent with individuals and non-JW groups, so as to address each genuine perspective presented.
In studying the Bible, I read whole chapters and then ponder questions based upon what I have read--what is the writer saying, how can I apply this to my life, what other passages of Scripture deal with the topic discussed?
I, too, like to read verses in their context, both within their chapter setting and by cross-reference. The intent and its application, both historically and in my life are essential to me, also. The Bible Teach book focuses on the verses required to get the essential core. Reading by Bible writer, by chronological sequence, or topical study, are other excellent ways of reading the Bible.

You wrote, on Feb 14, 2007, on another thread:
....maybe one day my hubby and I will be able to celebrate freely the holidays with our kids, especially birthdays, as those days are special to both him and I...
I don't know of any writings, even the Bible, that weren't written by humans, though inspired by the Creator. What's written by anyone these days must be derived from what's already written — until Satan's world is removed, I understand. Then there will be "new scrolls". It seems that we have to make the best of the "old scrolls" until the "new ones" come along.
a new board member asked me this.
i asked if it would be all right to publish my reply.
the question, in full, is, .
Like love, happiness is not something we can find by searching for it.The picture that the Watchtower paints of God is that of some kind of wrathful, demanding deity who requires everything we have to give, and still isn't satisfied, a God who wants to interfere with every aspect of our spiritual and personal lives. It would be difficult to have a close relationship with that sort of God, and none too desirable.
The reality is that we all have a relationship with God, whether we believe in him or not. The nature of that relationship, whether we love, hate or ignore him, will dictate how we conduct ourselves in our everyday lives.
Actually, Jehovah is love, and the happy God. As we study the Bible each day, we begin to assimilate that love and start doing things in life in such a way that attracts love and happiness to us.
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7) starts with a list of several "Blessed are ..." or "Happy are ..." depending on the translation.
So, if we look to incorporate those things in our life, happiness will result. Not that we won't feel grief or whatnot, but knowing that we're working on fulfilling Scripture produces happiness in itself.
If the Watchtower or another publication paints Jehovah as "some kind of wrathful, demanding deity ..." (whether in word or in illustration) it is these concepts that Jehovah's people work at debunking. I, for one, certainly don't see Jehovah as wrathful and demanding when I look at things correctly, from a spiritual (God-directed) view. That having been said, I have sometimes been very selfish and even wrathful and demanding myself. At those times, I probably could see Jehovah that way. There is, as the Bible accurately states, a war between the spiritual way and the fleshly way, whichever side we pick.
The final paragraph that I clipped from your post is very well put. I couldn't say it better myself. Reality is the best place for us all.

Since mrsjones5 prefers the NIV and found-my-way likes the holidays (just doesn't want her folks-in-law to know), I feel that the "Gospel of Luke" is just as good as any, especially since the physician and inspired Bible writer Luke is generally known to have written at least 2 "books": "[The Good News] According to Luke", and its sequel "Acts of the Apostles". It would be perhaps more accurate to refer to them as 1 Luke and 2 Luke (or I Luke and II Luke), like we refer to 1 Peter and 2 Peter (or I Peter and II Peter).
i think it's an atempt to catch faders or atleast make active dubs feel special.
it also could be a cost cutting measure to though.
getting rid of the km's and even up awakes and watchtowers would save some trees.
The announcement that was made was "... is NOT one of Jehovah's Witnesses" rather than the usual "... is NO LONGER one of Jehovah's Witnesses".
I'm wanting to BE what you are "NEVER" going back to. I'm talking to the wrong person, I see. I hope that someone lurking might be able to answer my questions. Anyone?

I want to talk about Jehovah, not the "old men in Brooklyn"; though it's quite a marvel the blessing Jehovah's given them, being able to work such long hours, even well past "retirement age" in most cases. They must really enjoy people!

Last I checked, the book of Luke is otherwise known as the Gospel of Luke, and very much in the Bible. And the Draw Close book studies the Bible's look into Jehovah's 4 cardinal qualities quite deeply.

WTS publishers and publications can and do help one learn their Bible better. In fact, though I have dozens of Bible translations in my personal library and Hebrew and Greek reference material as well, I personally am using the current Examining the Scriptures Daily and 2 NWTs right now as my starting place. They serve as an excellent place to underline and make marginal notes in. Many a reference is put there as to WTS citations. I use one NWT for the Bible Teach book references, and the other for the Revelation Climax references. They serve me well on a daily basis. Each of us must remain true to our own convictions. I hope you're served well by yours, too.
